With our busy and hectic lives these days, coupled with Instagram #FOMO, it is no wonder that most of us long for a vacation to take a well-deserved break. And for many people, it has somehow become a tradition to take at least 2 trips a year – one to a nearby country, and another to a more exotic, far-flung location.

But not everyone may be able to afford that kind of expense, especially when you don’t earn a high disposable income, or if you’re saving up for a big milestone e.g. a wedding or your house.

To satisfy your travel #FOMO without burning a hole in your wallet, try these 3 holiday destinations instead.

Vietnam – Hanoi

Hanoi has a vibrant city scene as well as a scenic and quiet countryside that is just hours away by bus. Perfect for those who are looking to make your Instagram friends envious of your trip!

Sip coffee in the vintage cafes of Hanoi, explore the streets for their local cuisine, or venture out and take a boat ride on the scenic rivers of Tam Coc. Most people love Halong Bay, and with its calm waters and scenic landscape, you’ll feel like you’re in another world completely.

Vietnam

Flights: Approximately $250 per pax, or less for return flights
Hotel: Approximately $15 a day

The local hotels are of decent quality, or you can rough it out at a backpackers’ inn for just US$4 a night. A 3-star hotel will cost you merely $20 to $30 a night.

As such, $700 can easily cover you for an entire week in Hanoi (check out how I did it here) with budget to spare even for shopping and massage!

Cambodia – Siem Reap

Step back in time as you uncover the historical architectural structures in what was Asia’s most prosperous civilisation…until its decline in the 14th century. You cannot miss a trip to Angkor Wat, the crown jewel of the Khmer Empire, and one of the largest man-made wonders in the world.

Siem Reap

Flights: Approximately $180 per pax for return flights
Hotel: Approximately $10 a day

Ancient ruins and temples aside, Siem Reap is also home to streets that come alive with colours and lights after sunset. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, try out exotic foods like fried scorpions, spiders and more. For more experiences, sail down the Mekong River and visit the stilt villages on Tonle Sap if time permits.

Malaysia – Langkawi

Situated in Malaysia, this island is popular among tourists for its beach activities and delicious food. Ride a jet ski, go parasailing, or take a SkyCab and walk across the SkyBridge for some breathtaking views of the sea and rock formations. At night, visit the Ayer Hangat market for local cuisine and street food.

If you just want to relax, then one of the best places to go is Air Hangat Village, where you can soak in a natural salt water jacuzzi to ease your stress and worries. The local Malaysians swear by the healing powers of the water here.

Flight: Approximately $80 per pax, return flights
Hotels: Approximately $20 per night

If you haven’t yet visited Malaysia’s coastal gem, then you should plan to check out Langkawi’s beaches and natural landscapes this year!
