It’s the shopping season again with Great Singapore Sale (GSS) in full swing. If heading down to Orchard Road sounds too much of a chore for you, take advantage of the many online shopping deals around.
Besides the GSS online shopping promotions, there’s a special annual sale that many people are looking forward to – Amazon Prime Day. Amazon will be having its annual sale on 15 and 16 July this year; you can expect heavily discounted electronics, books, home appliances, and really anything from Amazon.
Although the sale is exclusive to Amazon Prime members, you can get a free 30-day membership trial, which will last you through to the end of the sale. So anyone can join in the sale at no cost. As a Prime member, you also get free shipping from the US if you spend $60 and above in a transaction.
What are some of the deals you can get from Amazon Prime Day and how do they compare against other online shopping deals? In this article, we compare some of the popular items that people buy from Amazon to see if you actually save or if you end up paying more. We’ve also included some of the credit card deals for shopping on these sites so you can be sure that you’re getting the most bang for your buck.
Many savvy Singaporeans snag their electronics from Amazon during their sales like Prime Day and Cyber Monday. Half-price discounts are aplenty for the newest earphones and headphones, and if you’re lucky, you might even cop a high-end model at over 90% discount during their limited flash sales (called Lightning Deals).
Apart from that, you can expect discounted Amazon products like Echo-enabled electronics, or the Kindle e-book readers. This year, you can also expect discounts on Apple tablets and laptops as Apple is now selling directly on Amazon.
To give you an idea of the potential price savings, we’ve added comparisons of the same products on Courts and Lazada, both of which are running their own online GSS promotions. Take note that prices of electronics from Lazada were taken during their mid-year sale (12 July) and may have since gone up.
SONY WH-1000XM3 Headphones
Apple Airpods (2019)
iPad Air WiFi + Cellular 256GB(2019)
Echo Dot 3
Google Home Slate Fabric
LG HomBot Robot Vacuum Cleaner
Tefal airfryer (FZ series, 1KG capacity)
Kindle PaperWhite 4 6” 8GB (2019)
Although this is not a comprehensive list, you can expect discounts off earphones, headphones, tablets, smart home devices, and accessories on Prime Day. And remember to check out the Lightning Deals because that's when you can get 80% to 90% discount. Remember that you have to clock above $60 to qualify for free shipping to Singapore, and if the item you want does not ship to Singapore, you'll have to consider paying for the service of a freight forwarder.
If you already have an idea of what you want to buy, online shopping can provide huge savings, especially if you catch on to a sale like Amazon Prime Day. If you prefer to try out the electronics before purchasing them, consider heading down to the newly-opened Funan Digital Mall. Shoppers at Funan who pay with their AMEX CapitaCards stand to earn up to 20X Star$ with $100 or more spent.
Shopping for apparels and groceries on Amazon Prime Now
On Amazon, you’ll also get discounts of 30% or 40% off branded apparels. However, the sizing of the clothes may not be a good fit, especially if you've not tried the brands before. Unless you know your sizes for those brands or if you don’t mind taking a risk, we would advise against buying apparels on Amazon.
With Amazon Prime Now, you can also buy groceries and have them shipped to you within two hours. Compared to the likes of online groceries shopping from Redmart, Sheng Siong, or FairPrice, the major advantage of Prime Now is that you’ll get your groceries within two hours of ordering.
Tips to save more on your online shopping
One way to get extra rebates for online shopping from Amazon or other sites is to pay with a credit card, especially one that gives you cashback or air miles. On Amazon Prime, there is only one special card promotion – you'll get $20 off your first orderwhen you pay with your DBS or POSB cards.
However, you can earn cashback on your shopping with the right cashback cards. Check out this article to find out what are the best cashback cards for online shopping. If you plan to buy from other sites like Lazada and Zalora, they have exclusive tie-ups with different credit cards as mentioned in our GSS article.
