Best credit cards for CNY dinner in Singapore (2019)

Best credit cards for CNY dinner in Singapore (2019)

It is very important to provide good food during CNY reunion dinners. Because when their mouths are full, your relatives can’t ask when you’re getting married, or what you’re working as (so they can try and compare you to doctor / lawyer cousins).

Like Christmas, Chinese New Year drains our pockets with the shopping, ang bao giving and food splurges. So when we're given the chance to cut costs during the festive season, you can bet your bottom dollar we will seize it.

One way to do this? Finding the best reunion dinner meals (without sacrificing on style or taste, of course).

So without further ado, here are some of the top deals that won’t leave you broke – especially after giving away those ang paos:

Xi Yan Shaw

Xi Yan Shaw is a traditional Chinese restaurant – if you can’t stand the idea of bizarre fusion experiments and food in martini glasses, this is the place to be.

This CNY dinner place comes with two distinct set menus - the seven-course Prosperity and six-course Auspicious menus – being under $50 per head.

The Prosperity menu features staples like yu sheng, shrimp paste chicken, and Sichuan prawns for $49.88 per person (minimum four persons). The Auspicious menu is virtually similar, minus a kai lan dish at $39.88 per person (minimum two people).

Best credit card to use

Unfortunately, Xi Yan Shaw doesn’t have a specific credit card tie-up this year. But we know some of you will still want to go.

Considering that it costs under $50 per head, your bank account might take a significant hit if you're paying for everyone. So here are some ways to save.

American Express True Cashback

  • 1.5% cashback on all spend worldwide
  • 3% cashback on first $5,000 spent

The American Express True Cashback card gives you 1.5% cashback on all spending. But more importantly, you get 3% cashback for the first $5,000 charged to the card. So if you’re getting a new card for 2019, start with this one and use if for CNY dinner.

Other cards to consider

If you’re an HSBC Advance customer, consider using the HSBC Advance credit card for an extra 1% cashback. This nets you 3.5% cashback on your CNY dinner.

The Maybank FC Barcelona Visa Signature card can give you 1.6% cashback on all your spending. That includes the amount spent on your CNY dinner.

Min Jiang

Specialising in Chinese cuisine with a heavy Cantonese bent, Min Jiang manages to keep it fresh every year.

As always with Min Jiang, the menu range and options are stupendously wide: price ranges go from $118++ per person to $1838++ per table. Options include three different types of yu sheng, six course lunch menus, lunch and dinner menus, etc.

However, note that the big credit card discount from DBS (see below) applies only to the Lunar New Year Treasures Takeaway – ask the staff for help if you’re not certain.

Take some time poring over the menu options – they must have been going for something that’s phonebook-length.

DBS Altitude Visa card

  • 1.2 miles per $1 (local spend)
  • 2 miles per $1 (overseas spend in foreign currency)

If you’re dining in, use a DBS card: you get 15% off anything under the Lunar New Year Treasures takeaway (excluding Festive Treasure Takeaway set menu). That’s a pretty sizeable discount – you’d save around $25 on, say, a $168 yu sheng platter.

If you’re into travelling, definitely consider getting the DBS Altitude Visa card for use here. You get 1.2 bonus miles per dollar spent on local dining. Coupled with the 15% discount, that’s a pretty solid deal.

Other cards to consider

The DBS Live Fresh card is a good alternative that delivers 5% cashback. But make sure the restaurant accepts contactless payment as this is applicable only if you use pay with Visa payWave. Combine this with the 15% discount and you will see a substantial savings.

Azur’s Festive Fortune Buffet includes double boiled black chicken, oyster mee sua, braised pork knuckles, and more. This is also the first time we’ve seen drunken prawns at a buffet!

The buffet menu also changes on CNY eve, ramping it up with braised sea cucumber, roast pork belly, and steamed sea bass.

Prices are $68++ per adult / $34++ per child for lunch, and $78++ per adult / $39++ per child for dinner. Prices can vary further on Chinese New Year Eve, on CNY day itself, etc., so do check-in first.

There is a 20% discount on the Festive Fortune Buffet for selected HSBC cards. We suggest the HSBC Visa Platinum card, which also comes with a 5% cashback on dining (and on top of that, 1 Rewards Point per $1 spent).

Other cards to consider

If you prefer a rewards scheme, go for the HSBC Revolution card instead. This will also give you 5 reward points per dollar spent.

Otherwise, if you don’t have / want an HSBC card, your next best option is the Maybank FC Barcelona Visa Signature card. This will give you 1.6% cashback with no rewards cap – not as great as the 20% discount, but it’s still a way to save.

Hai Tien Lo

Located in Pan Pacific Singapore, Hai Tien Lo serves Cantonese cuisine with a slight modern twist.

They don’t have a CNY dinner deal, but they do have a deal for CNY takeaways – Lapis Surabya, home made pork terrine, pork char siew sausage, and of course there are the mandatory yu sheng platters / Poon Choy treasure pots. These will make it easy to deliver a great reunion dinner right from your own dining table.

The premium wealth treasure pot for six is $468.86, while the blossoming treasures yu sheng for four to six is $147.66. Most of the other small goodies, like cakes and snacks, range from $20 to $70.
