Maybank FC Barcelona Visa Signature Card

This card gives you 1.6% cashback on all local spending. Oh, did we mention there's no cap on the cashback.

That makes the Maybank FC Barcelona Visa Signature Card ideal for big ticket purchases. If you’re planning to buy something like a wide screen television, or install air-conditioning, apply for this card first and then pay through it.

If you’re new to the bank, you can also get a free Samsonite Orfeo 60cm Spinner luggage, worth $420. You just need to apply for this card, plus one other Maybank credit card. Charge a minimum of $500 to the cards within the first two months of approval, to get your free luggage.

Good for:

  • Barcelona FC fans to have a credit card that shows their team allegiance

  • Buying big ticket items

HSBC Advance

HSBC Advance Card
  • 3.5% cashback (HSBC Advance banking customer with min. spend of $2,000)
  • 2.5% cashback (min. spend of $2,000)
  • 1.5% cashback (spending below $2,000)

HSBC Advance

This is a good credit card to pool the household expenses on once you hit the minimum spending of $2,000. Doing so qualifies you for a 2.5% cashback.

If you’re an existing HSBC Advance banking customer, you’ll get an additional 1% cashback.

Can't hit the $2,000 mark? Don't worry, you’ll still get at least 1.5% cashback.

With a minimum 1.5% cashback, one might think this is a close match to the Maybank Barcelona FC Visa Signature card. But unlike the Maybank card, HSBC's offering has a cashback of $70 per month of $125 per month if you have a HSBC Advance banking account.

As such, it sets an upper limit to when you should stop spending on the HSBC Advance card, given that you don't gain additional cashback beyond the cap.

Consider your spending amount to see if it makes sense. If you qualify for 3.5% cashback, that means the minimum spend of $2,000 gets you the same cashback if you aren't a HSBC Advance banking account holder.

All things considered, the HSBC Advance card is not bad if you use it for things you needed to buy anyway (think groceries, school textbooks, furniture, and so forth).

This card is also good if you have a car. On top of the usual cashback, you get a 16% discount at Caltex, with cash rebates of up to 5%. Shell stations will give you a 14% discount, with up to 6% cashback.

New customers get to choose between a free luggage or $100 cashback. Just charge $600 to the card within a month of being approved.

For existing customers, you still get bonus $50 cashback, when you spend at least $600 within a month of getting approved.

Good for:

  • Being a shared “family” card; charge all your purchases through the same card to quickly get the maximum $70 cashback every month

  • Families that own a car

  • Initial freebie of $50 or $100 in instant cashback

Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback Credit Card

Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback Card

  • No rewards cap
  • Activate within 30 days of card approval for $100 cashback

Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback Credit Card

The Standard Chartered Unlimited Cashback card gives you 1.5% unlimited cashback on all spending.

Similar to the Maybank Barcelona FC Visa Signature Card, there's no cashback cap to the card, which makes it ideal for big ticket items.

While the Standard Chartered card gives you 0.1% less cashback than the Maybank counterpart, this card has other ways to make up for it.

You can also get one-for-one dining deals, from places as fancy as restaurants within Shangri-La to a Harry’s Bar.

That could be handy when you’re expecting to pay for a pricey Valentine’s Day meal, or a nice first date.

If you’re new to Standard Chartered, you’ll get $100 cashback within 30 days of being approved – no strings attached. If you already have a Standard Chartered card, you’ll still get $20 cashback within 30 days of being approved.

Good for:

  • Buying big ticket items

  • Lunch and dinner dates

  • Frequent Uber users

Look beyond cashback benefits

Cashback is just one facet of the benefits you get with credit cards. While the cards listed here (except for the HSBC Advance card) come with unlimited cashback, you should also custom your spending needs to the credit card you're getting.
