Is it your first time to ride a plane or explore a foreign country on your own? Have you ever experienced forgetting your passport or making last minute packing and planning? What if you lost some important documents during flight – does the travel insurance coverage include that? Travelling can be exciting and scary at the same time. Try these simple vacation tips to get a stress-free trip!

1. Online check-in

If you are prone to arriving late at the airport and do not want to run the risk of missing your flight because EDSA is being EDSA, checking-in online is the best solution. In the past, online checking was not available in the Philippines, which is why you need to be in the airport at least 2 hours before the flight because of the long queues and the outdated systems. However, airlines such as Philippine Airlines and budget carriers like Cebu Pacific and Air Asia now offer the ease of online checking, a service that doubles as one of the better travel hacks around.

Remember that online checking is different from checking in your bags. Online checking is needed to confirm that you are taking the flight. Some airlines allow checking in at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled flight.

2. Pick your flight seat early

Preferred seats are always an add-on, meaning you need to pay a few extra pesos to get the seat you want, so that you get in the mood for your dream adventure travel. There is nothing worse than being stuck in a seat you wished you didn't get – some people want the aisle seat, others like the seat nearest the window. The best way to mitigate this is to book your seat when you book your flight. We all have our preferences – aisle or window seat, nearer to the toilet or far from potential crying babies. Preferred seat is usually an added cost to your expenses. CebuPac offers it at as low as ₱130 for regular seats and ₱300 for seats near the lavatory.

Another one of our travelling tips: do check back a day or two before your flight to ensure that flight plans have not changed to ensure you have your desired seat.

3. Plan your itinerary and keep it handy

It's a great idea to have all your reference documents in a neat folder within your reach – flight numbers and departure times, hotel addresses, emergency contact numbers and necessary documents (passport, a copy of our vacation tips, et al). These will also be important when you meet the immigration officer because sometimes, they ask about which hotel you will be staying in or what is its address.

You can also draw up a brief holiday itinerary that you can keep in this folder, so that if you ever run out of ideas of places to visit you know where to look for some inspiration.

4. Buy travel insurance coverage

Some may consider this document unnecessary, especially if you are going on a short adventure travel. However, getting trip insurance not only ensures you have peace of mind when you travel, it also provides you some monetary relief should something unfortunate happen. Disruptions to your holiday can come in many forms, including flight delays, loss of personal belongings or sudden sickness. So why stress over these when you can have access to a 24-hour helpline that is much needed in a foreign land.

A travel insurance plan can be as cheap as ₱250 per trip (from day 1 onwards) and you can be covered for up to ₱1 million, including medical expenses and equipment loss, depending on the insurance policy. That's one of the best travel hacks that ₱250 pesos can buy, if you ask us. It's even cheaper than selecting a seat near the exit of the plane, which can cost at around ₱300.

5. After following all these vacation tips, relax

It may sound intuitive, but for many travellers getting anxious prior to the flight is part of the trip! Between rushing to the airport, getting through the queues and running through your brain on what needs to be done and what vacation tips you remember, anxiety levels usually run higher than normal. The best way to relax is to give yourself enough time for a drink before you board the plane to get yourself to start slowing down. Bring a game or two on your phone or make a playlist for travelling. It might even inspire you to create a nice video later.
