Looking to travel to Paris? Get all the information you need to have a safe, enjoyable and unforgettable trip while there, courtesy of GoBear Malaysia. We’ll present you with things you need to keep it mind before and during your time there, especially the need to get travel insurance for

About the most romantic city  of Paris

Bienvenue! Paris is the capital city of France, and also accounted one of the fashion capitals of the world. Paris has been a capital city even before there was such a country called France.

As with all of France, Paris observes Central European Time (UTC+1) with daylight savings. Being in the Northern Hemisphere, summer comes around the middle of the year, and winter towards the end.

Despite recent events, the city remains a very safe place, but because of its relatively high cost of services, most Malaysian travel insurance policies include Paris in Area 2 (usually the second price band). Check your specific plan to make sure you’re covered if you decide to go. The currency for most countries within the EU is the Euro (EUR), and Paris (being part of France) is no different.

Parisian languages

France is very proud of its language and guards it jealously and zealously. The Parisians are no less proud to be French. But being the cosmopolitans that they are, they also speak English when required. Spanish, German and Italian are also spoken here, as is Arabic amongst a growing population of Muslim immigrants. Language-wise, you should not have significant difficulties in contacting the emergency services concierge provided by your travel insurance in Paris.

Parisian food

Being the capital city, Paris hosts all the regional French cuisines as well as international ones. The famous Michelin Guide, after all, originally rated the best restaurants throughout Paris. Traditional French food is quite healthful. Much like Chinese, the French take their food very seriously. So, yes, you can even find Malaysian food (it’s even halal!) in Paris, but take the opportunity to experience so much more.

Food safety standards are generally quite high here, but just in case, GoBear Malaysia recommends travel insurance for Paris.

What to buy in Paris

As one of the four fashion capitals of the world, one might expect to come to Paris and pick up haute couture clothing as well as accessories. Eau de toilette is probably another hot item on the shopping list. Inquire about VAT refunds in-store; you might be eligible depending on how much you spent and when you’re leaving.

French wines are also accounted to be amongst the best in the world, and you can pick up a wideselection of them in Paris.

GoBear Malaysia recommends checking whether your credit card covers lost or stolen purchases while overseas, or you can buy travel insurance for your Paris shopping spree.

Things to do when in Paris

Take a trip up the Eiffel Tower. Snap a picture at the Arc de Triomphe. Wander around the world’s largest museum, the Louvre, where the Mona Lisa is permanently on display. At night, take a walk around the River Seine (or take a cruise on it during the day). Paris is a city full of sights and wonders, and you will never get bored here. Just make sure that your travel insurance for Paris covers you for all the things you intend to do. Paris has a very vibrant artistic – especially musical and theatrical – community, with concerts and plays almost year-round in the various theatres that dot the city. If you’re feeling up to it, take a visit to the Moulin Rouge.

Paris travel advisory & checklist

Have a hassle-free trip! International travel, especially to Paris, has its own set of issues that youshould prepare for, so that you can properly enjoy your holiday overseas. Aside from travel insurance for Paris, GoBear Malaysia recommends you consider the following:

Passport & visa requirements for Paris

Make sure your passport has at least 6 months’ validity after the dates you intend to go; you may not be allowed to travel if your passport is too close to expiry. As a member of the EU, France (and therefore Paris) allows visa-free visits to tourists holding Malaysian passports.

In the event that your passport or other travel documents are lost or stolen, make sure you know the emergency contact details for your travel insurance concierge in Paris, so that you can be assisted as quickly as possible.

Electricity & water in Paris

Paris, as with all of France, typically uses the Type C power socket. This means that you will need a universal travel adapter. However, its 230V/50Hz electrical systems are close enough to Malaysia’s that you can otherwise simply plug in your electrical items. If you have many items to plug in, just bring a Malaysian extension board and plug that into the travel adapter. The tap water here is generally safe to drink, although GoBear Malaysia recommends boiling the water if you have a sensitive stomach.

Parisian telecommunications & Internet coverage

The telecommunications network in Paris covers the entire city. Mobile phones bought in Malaysia should work seamlessly with French pre-paid SIMs, but do check the specific frequencies your phone uses against the ones your preferred French telco supports. Wi-Fi is widely available everywhere yougo, as is 4G LTE. The emergency number is 112 from fixed lines and mobile phones alike.

Healthcare & medical facilities in Paris

Parisian medical facilities are world-class (but also very expensive, so GoBear Malaysia recommends travel insurance for all Paris travel), with medical facilities available throughout the city.

Parisian credit card facilities

International credit card networks that are present in Paris include Visa, MasterCard, and American Express (to a smaller degree). UnionPay is also widely available. Credit cards are accepted almost universally by even the smaller retailer and food outlets.
