10 Things You Didn't Know Were Covered By Your Travel Insurance

How Well Do You Know Your Travel Insurance Benefits?

You’ve likely heard all about the usual benefits that come with a travel insurance plan like compensation for missed flights or lost baggage, but there’s a world of insurance extras of which most aren’t aware.

Here are 10 special benefits that you (probably) did not know was covered with your travel insurance plan:

1. Medication Despatch

This benefit is especially helpful to those who are dependent on special medications or medical equipment as it can cover the cost to despatch them, if unavailable locally.

Be sure to check the extent of your coverage as the specifics differ. For instance, some plans may only cover your medication needs when you are hospitalised while others may simply provide assistance to organize the despatch, and you may have to cover the costs yourself.

2. Alternative Medicines

If you’re not a fan of western medicine but instead prefer to be healed with traditional treatments, the medical benefits of your travel insurance could cover the costs.

Plans offering this benefit will generally pay for alternative treatments received from a registered traditional medical practitioner, which includes chiropractors, acupuncturists and osteopaths.

3. Kidnap and Ransom

While you probably don’t even want to entertain the thought of being kidnapped and held for ransom while on vacation, unfortunately, it does happen. Tourists are sometimes at greater risk because they aren’t familiar with their surroundings, assumed to be carrying cash and valuables or perceived to be wealthy.

This type of benefit will pay the ransom demands if you are held hostage after a kidnapping, where the maximum amount your provider will fork over is based on your plan tier.

Under certain circumstances however, your provider may withhold payment. If the incident is not reported to the relevant authorities or if it occurs in your country of residence or in exclusion areas (e.g. South America or Africa), your provider might not be liable to pay.

4. Overbooked Flights

Remember the United Airlines incident where a flight was overbooked and major drama ensued? Well thankfully, with this benefit, you can skip getting dragged off your flight, kicking and screaming!

Your provider will pay out a sum for the hours you are delayed, based on the amount payable in your plan when your flight is overbooked and alternatives aren’t immediately available.

5. Golf Insurance

Golfers will certainly delight in this special benefit that covers the cost of loss of or damages to golf equipment like clubs, shoes, caddie cars and accessories.

Other golf benefits could include a personal liability cover while playing (e.g. injuring someone else) and a celebration pay-out if you achieve a hole-in-one! Bear in mind that this benefit is often applied as a rider or optional add-on to your travel insurance.

6. Special Sports

Your extreme side may come alive while on vacation but most travel insurances will not cover treatments for injuries retained while engaging in extreme sports or dangerous activities. However, your policy might provide a ‘special sports’ cover for certain activities such as skiing, snowboarding or scuba diving.

This is sometimes offered as an optional rider or it may be included in your plan, which in either case will only apply at non-competitive levels (i.e. you’re snowboarding for fun and not professional competition).

Also, unless otherwise stated, you will still typically remain covered when engaging in sports activities that are meant for the general public and tourists.

7. Home Burglary or Theft

If your home is burgled while you are on vacation, this type of benefit can cover the losses and damages related to such an event. Cover is usually extended to personal valuables like jewellery, home contents (e.g. appliances, furniture, etc.), and personal effects like clothing.

However, cash and its equivalents (e.g. cheques, precious coins, and money orders) are not often covered with this benefit.

8. Child Accompaniment Benefit and Education Fund

If you fall sick (or worse) while on vacation with your kids, this type of benefit will cover the travel and accommodation expenses of a relative or authorised person, to travel home with your cubs.

Additionally, your policy may also come with an education fund that will pay out a specified amount in the unfortunate case of your accidental death. The money will be provided for the education of your surviving children under the age of 18.

9. Insolvency of Travel Agency

If you have booked and paid for a holiday package via a travel agency that is unable to honour the agreement, this type of benefit can reimburse your flight tickets, accommodation and other costs.

Bear in mind though that your provider will typically only pay out if you have purchased your travel insurance shortly after buying flight tickets and tour packages (within 7 to 10 days) and definitely not after the agency ‘makes off’ with your money.

10. Personal Liabilities

Picture this, you’re having a blast on vacation, it’s all fun and games, then someone loses an eye – and you’re (allegedly) to blame! With a personal liabilities benefit, your legal fees to defend yourself in court or the damages you are liable to pay if you are found responsible is covered.

This benefit also extends for your role in accidental losses or damages to property as well as death, injury or illness to a third party.

The covers listed here are not guaranteed with every insurance policy, as benefits do vary with plans and providers (noted as optional add-ons).  However, you are likely to be covered for more when you opt for comprehensive plans. To be safe, be sure to read the fine print before buying.
